Visit Upnor Castle in Rainham

A History

Upnor Castle is an impressive Elizabethan artillery fort built in the 16th century to defend the dockyards along the river Medway. Located in Maidstone, Kent, the castle was built between 1559 and 1567 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. A number of the Royal Navy’s warships were moored at the Chatham Dockyard during this time, presenting a target for potential attack, particularly during heightened tensions with Spain and the Netherlands. The castle is situated next to the river Medway, offering up beautiful riverside views while you explore the fort. The fort itself offers a glimpse into Tudor military architecture, most notably in the cobblestone courtyards, stone walls and towers.

The Raid of 1667

In 1667, Dutch forces staged a raid on the dockyards and successfully attacked the British fleet. A group of Dutch warships sailed up the Medway with the aim of hampering the British naval efforts. Despite the fort firing its cannons on the approaching fleet, it was unable to prevent the raid, marking a significant moment in the history of the castle and the local area.
