About Darland Banks

At the heart of Darland lies Darland Banks, a 44.5-hectare Local Nature Reserve managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust. This chalk grassland habitat is celebrated for hosting the largest population of man orchids in Britain, named because of their resemblance to the human form. The reserve also supports a diverse range of wildlife, including butterflies and birds such as willow warblers, yellowhammers, linnets, and lesser whitethroats. If you’re a birdwatcher or wildlife enthusiast, there’s plenty to see in Darland Banks.

Visitors can explore a network of informal footpaths that snake across the steeply sloping hillside, offering stunning panoramic views of the Medway towns. The reserve is open year-round, with the best time to visit being from May to August when the wildflowers and butterflies are most abundant.

Adjacent to the natural reserve once stood Fort Darland, a defensive fort constructed between 1870 and 1900 as part of the defensive network for Chatham Dockyard. During World War II, it served as a British Army detention centre. The fort was unfortunately demolished in the 1960s, leaving behind ruins and remnants that people can still visit and enjoy.
