About Gillingham

Gillingham is a lively, down-to-earth town in the heart of Medway, known for its strong community feel, good transport links, and mix of residential charm and urban convenience. Whether you’re commuting, raising a family, or exploring the local parks and waterfront, Gillingham offers a solid blend of practicality and personality.

Gillingham’s history is closely tied to the military and maritime development of the Medway towns. It grew rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries due to the expansion of nearby Chatham Dockyard, becoming home to dock workers, engineers, and servicemen. During both World Wars, the town played a key role in naval and military support. Today, traces of its past are still visible in the architecture, local museums, and the strong sense of identity that runs through the community. In 1921, the town was extended to include Rainham. Many of its inhabitants were employed in the Royal Dockyard until it closed in 1984.

Today, Gillingham is a well-connected hub with plenty to offer. The town centre has a mix of high-street names and independent shops, plus a busy market that brings the community together a few times a week. The Strand, with its riverside walks, splash pool, and boating lake, is a popular spot for families, while Gillingham Park and Great Lines Heritage Park provide plenty of green space. It’s also home to Gillingham FC, a key part of the town’s identity and a source of local pride.
